Chapter Eleven

Gina’s alarm clock rang at six o’clock on Sunday morning. Kelly slammed her hand on the bell, nearly breaking it. She climbed out of bed ignoring Gina’s sleepy grumbles of disapproval, and dressed in the dark. She grabbed a yogurt, and left a note for Gina in the kitchen to explain why she had left: “Karate lesson at 7 a.m. Haven’t forgotten about the BBQ. Maybe we can play with the hammock again?”

Sam was waiting in his office when she arrived at the dojo. He took one look at her disheveled appearance and shook his head. “Hurry up and get your gi on. We’re going to practice firearms defense tactics this morning and I hope you had a good night’s sleep.”

“Of course,” Kelly replied, smiling. Her sleep had been good, though not long. She changed into her karate uniform, noting that the bag from Marcus’s apartment was still safely hidden in her locker. She had brought the manila envelope from Rausche’s house to add to her stash. After snapping the lock, she headed out to the mat to stretch. Before long, Sam came out of the office. He began the lesson with the usual bow and then told Kelly to stand in front position with her eyes closed. As he talked about guns, he circled around her place on the mat, clicking a metallic lever repeatedly.

Just when Kelly had started to relax, his hand landed on her shoulder and her muscles immediately tensed. Rausche’s fingers seemed to be gripping her again. Sam had the barrel of the gun against her lower back and his hand on her neck. “Don’t tense up when you feel the gun on your back. And keep your eyes closed until I tell you to move.”

Although she knew Sam didn’t have a real gun, the feel of the metal against her spine sent a shiver through her body. She exhaled and then listened to Sam’s breathing. “As soon as you feel my hand shift, you need to react.”

Kelly spun to the side and wrapped Sam’s arm, fighting to keep the gun pointed away from her. He overpowered her and twisted out of the arm lock, then aimed the gun at her. “Just watch the red laser.” He pointed the gun at the back wall and pulled the trigger. A red laser appeared on the wall. “All you have to do is keep moving.”

“I can do that.” She lunged to the side as Sam redirected the laser on her. She smiled. “You know, picturing you with a real gun is frightening.”

“Yeah, I decided to use the laser gun when Rick told me to take it easy on you. He said you were going to have a long day.”

Before she could consider what Rick must have had in mind, Sam had the laser on her leg. “Damn,” she swore softly, jumping to the side.

She paid attention, as close as she could, to every movement Sam made with the gun. The last thing she wanted to do was think about another gun after the fight with Rausche yesterday.
